Forward to the Retrospective

The Art Students League of New York has many unique distinctions. One distinction is our roster of instructors which, historically speaking, comprises some of the most prominent names in American art, with artists such as Will Barnet, Thomas Hart Benton, William Merritt Chase, Daniel Chester French, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Reginald Marsh, John Sloan, John Twachtman and scores of others who have influenced generations of artists for over 130 years. The League has always had a policy of hiring artists who teach to be instructors; those who made their reputations in their field of art first, and then have the ability and desire to teach their philosophy of art and art making to students. Andrew Lukach exemplifies this ideal. He has had a major impact on hundreds of students in over four decades of teaching both at the League's 57th Street and Vytlacil Campuses.

Mr. Lukach also studied and trained at the League, getting an education that gave him the tools he needed to become the outstanding painter and artist he is today. His work is charged and infused with the understanding of the complexities of picture making, from composition to color, knowledge forgotten or ignored by many who call themselves artists today.

I have had the privilege of knowing Andrew Lukach for over twenty years and take pride in the fact that he continues to inspire future generations of artists with his fine painting and formidable knowledge.
